Teach The World Online

Hey Everyone!

Now that we've done introductions, I wanted to share this great opportunity that I experienced at UNC Asheville this week. Through one of my education classes, I've been able to teach children in Haiti over Skype in a program called Teach The World Online (TWOL). As I'm only a freshman, I was extremely nervous when I heard I was going to be teaching a class already and not to mention, one that was learning English hours away. However, I had my first class yesterday and the lesson couldn't have gone better. Considering the horrible state of Haiti, the students are eager to learn and are becoming very good at speaking English. I learned that through Skype, ordinary people can teach students around the world with the TWOL program. I'm so thankful I can be a part of the program and I hope to continue it after my education class.

I've been so amazed at the experiences I've had in Asheville so far. By being a part of the UNC system, we receive so many opportunities while still having the great sense of community only a small private school would have. I'm only in my second semester of college and I've already tutored students at a local elementary school, taught a foreign class online, and will be observing more classrooms soon. I feel so lucky to already be emerged into classrooms since the beginning of my college career and I know I'll feel more than prepared for my career in teaching once I leave UNC Asheville.
