Homeless Youth

In my Psyc of Adolescent class we recently watched a 20/20 special on homeless youth in America. This was a real eye opener for me, I know there are homeless people in the United States, but I never really thought of some of those being young kids. Here is a link to the video, http://abc.go.com/watch/2020/SH559026/VD55108764/2020-128-homeless-youth. It is a great video and was inspiring to see the young kids overcoming their struggles but it was also really hard to watch what they had to go through.

954,914 children were homeless and enrolled in public schools in the 2008-2009 school year. I got this fact at http://www.naehcy.org/facts.html and there is also a lot of other good information if you wanna check it out. This got me thinking of how this would affect my teaching and classroom environment. Schools are suppose to be a safe place for kids where they have structure but enjoy being there. As teachers we may be wanting the kids to focus on their work without knowing they may be worrying about where they will get their next meal or where they will sleep for the night. We might have the student that doesn't have the best hygiene and wonder about the parenting or think the student is to lazy when really they have no place to take a shower. As teacher this is just another example of why it is really important to know our students and their background to offer the best education possible. I encourage everyone to watch this video!
