So I just realized that I have actually never written a blog before. How about that?! So this will be my first job in the Teacher Recruitment Office here at UNC Asheville as well as my first blog; so here we go!
I'll just start this off by introducing myself: Hi, I'm Ashley Pompey, senior Literature major with education licensure 9-12. I hail from Jamestown, NC (anyone know where that is?) but I call Asheville home now. I am the new TRR(Teacher Recruitment Representative), but I am also a UNC Asheville Ambassador, a member of the BSA(Black Student Association) and an avid Bulldog sports fan.
Firsts things first, why did I come to UNC Asheville? When I first applied and got into this university, most of my classmates, family and friends said, "UNC what? Is it near Boone?" Yes, the university was a relatively unknown in my high school but, I knew that if I wanted the small class sizes and individual attention from professors, I could get it here. Now that I've spent almost four years here I couldn't imagine myself going to school anywhere else. And I'm happy to boast that the number of Ragsdale Alum who are now Bulldogs has grown significantly!
When I first came to UNC Asheville, I wondered what I wanted to do as far as a major and career. One of the great advantages of a liberal education is that we all literally get a taste of what most of the departments are like before we have to declare. The multi-disciplinary approach to education lead me to the Literature & Language department because it was not simply focused on one dynamic or region of literature. As for my licensure area, it was the experience of having excellent teachers in my family and high school that influenced me to want to become a teacher. I love the liberal arts education I've gotten here and I know our department cultivates future educators to not only be proficient in their subject area, but also in educational pedagogy.
I could go on and on about how wonderful UNC Asheville is and that everyone should want to be a teacher; but I won't do that. Basically, it all comes down to doing what you love in a place you love. I've found that here. I'm really excited to begin work in the Teacher Recruitment office. I think it'll be a ton of fun and an excellent experience in my field of study. Wish Me Luck!
