Hi everyone!

It's fall and the weather in Asheville is nice and crisp! :) I started baking pumpkin-flavored everything and baking in general.

Pumpkin scones!

I baked chocolate-toffee cookies for the tutors I worked with today!

I'm having a fantastic week so far! The first draft of my thesis is done and due tomorrow. Okay, I have a few aesthetic changes to make, but I'm ready to polish it up after I post. :)

My high school seniors are coming to UNCA on Friday! I love them and I love planning, which is why I spent about two hours today just figuring out to which classes the students will go and with which tutors. I'm taking three students to my PSYC225: Personality class. The professor is odd, in a way that makes our class interesting. Then I'll taken them to Beginning Spanish I. I tutor Spanish regularly at the high school and now, as I'm finishing history, I want to study more Spanish. I took 4 years in middle and high school... maybe I can come back after college and get a Spanish degree/teaching licensure. Maybe.

As one of the few seniors still tutoring with the AVID program at the high school, I work with a lot of sophomores and juniors. I love the group of tutors I'm working with so much that I'm starting to think I'm a sophomore or junior. Then I remember I'm a senior and almost done, and it's depressing. While I'm super excited to student teach and then have my very own class, I won't get to have college fun anymore. :/ My point is, with my thesis mostly done (hopefully!), I'm taking advantage of all the college I have left! I had fun as a freshman in the dorms and then I stacked on a ton of responsibilities and classwork... now is time to reclaim my youth. Haha.

Oh yeah, I got a hair cut. My head feels lighter but I have to deal with straightening my side bangs in the morning... or usually, just pinning the hairs up. :)

Before and after

My housemate recently had a lot of homework, which made him sad, but look at the cool business cards he produced! He's a Multimedia Arts and Science major at UNCA!

P.S. I like photos. :)

Lemar's Here!

Hello Everyone:

My name is Lemar, and I'm a Junior student here at UNC Asheville. I'm originally from the Greenbrier Valley area of West Virginia where I lived for 14 years, then we made a drastic move to the Northern Virginia/DC Area where I lived for 5 years. We moved to North Carolina in 2005 where I completed my senior year at Mooresville Senior High School, and then proceeded to UNC Asheville.

I orginally came to UNC Asheville planning to major in French with Licensure, then I added Spanish to that mix. I took 4 levels of Spanish and decided I wanted to switch to a Management Program. So now I'm majoring in French w/Licensure and Management w/Business Administration Concentration. Seeing that I changed my major to management my junior year (a 60 credit hour major), most of you will graduate before I will. :-)

I consider myself involved: I am apart of the N.U.E. Noiz Step Team, Black Student Association, Hillel, and a URJ/Kesher College Reform Jewish Liaison for UNC Asheville. I also work on campus as an RA in the residence halls (please don't call them dorms), and I am a Residential Senator in the Student Government Association. Additionally, I am a Teacher Recruitement Representative, and I work part time at Starbucks Coffee outside of DT Asheville.

I enjoy most comedy movies, playing video games on my Wii and PS3 (Favorite Video Game Series: Mortal Kombat), and generally just hanging out. Like Julie, I own Apple products including an iPhone and a Black MacBook (aka BlackBook).

I'm happy I have the opportunity to work with such a committed, caring professional and paraprofessional staff here in Teacher Recruitement, and I'm excited to get to meet students and talk to them about education and licensure.

Hello!

Hello!

My name is Adrienne and I am the Fall 2008 Teacher Recruitment Representative Intern. I am so excited to be part of this program! I started in UNC Asheville's Teacher Education Program in Fall of 2007 and am seeking Middle School Licensure in Social Studies and Language Arts. I graduated from UNC Charlotte in May of 2004 with a degree in Political Science. I spent the year in our nation's capital working and playing hard! I migrated back to the Asheville area in Summer of 2005 and I have no intention of leaving. I student teach next spring and I can't wait! If I am not roaming the halls of Zagier, you can find me reading on the quad, drinking a latte at my new favorite coffee spot, The Green Sage or working as a hostess at The Corner Kitchen. I also enjoy poetry, reading, music, spending time with friends and meeting new people!

I am so excited to be working with Alex, Carly, Julie and Lemar this semester. We have a wonderful team!

About Julie!

Hi everyone! I'm Julie, a senior history major from Huntington Beach, California. And I don't just mean I grew up in California, I lived there until I came to college in Asheville and my parents still live there. I've loved the 3+ years in Asheville thus far. I believe college is the opportunity to go somewhere completely different and gain some knowledge and experience.

Right now I'm working on my 25+ page history thesis. Our first draft is due in a little over a week! I researched Little Saigon in Westminster, CA and how the Vietnamese people along with the local government's efforts formed the largest Vietnamese community in the U.S. I chose the topic because my Chinese-Vietnamese parents came to the U.S. as part of the second wave/boat people in 1979. I won't go into detail, but you can e-mail me if you'd like to read my first draft. :) I lined up 10 UNCA friends and alums this weekend to help me edit!

I also spend 14-16 hours a week at the local high school tutoring 9th through 12th graders. That's more than I go to school but only because I'm taking a light semester. Tutoring is pretty much the best experience ever! This is my third year and second year as the first ever tutor leader. Because this is my last year with the program, I'm making sure I get the most out of my experience: I attend class with students sometimes especially when I'm tutoring Advanced Functions and Modeling and I go to each football game even away games (6 of my kids are on the team). I love my high schoolers - you really don't want me to go into any more detail here... my roommate and friends will tell you how they've learned to tune me out on the topic.

What else? I like Apple products, bad reality TV shows, Spanish, interior design, web and graphic design, shopping, watching mixed martial arts, downtown Asheville, Atlanta, and talking. :)
